5 Questions with Michael Norseng, MSPC Creative Director

Michael Norseng spent the early stages of his career in New York City, working for notable magazines, such as GQ and Esquire. In these roles he had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s finest directors, creatives and famous subjects, landing him recognition and many industry awards.

After spending 16 years in NYC publishing, Michael now brings his set of skills and talent back to the Midwest as MSPC’s creative director. In this role, he works with multiple teams to create dynamic content. For example, Michael played a critical role in the creative process and production of My North, a 52-week video story series highlighting well-known Minnesotans.

In today’s edition of 5 Questions we get to learn more about Michael:

Tell us about your role in one sentence.

That would be an extremely long sentence. But if I had to do a short character count: My job is to create, advise, interpret, or just merely push the needle towards a positive and inventive presentation of stories and or content within the platforms of print and digital.

What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?

I‘d hope for “affable,” “innovative,” and “collaborative.” But I think there would be a spectrum of replies. I’d just hope that “arrogant” wouldn’t register any votes.

Who/what inspires you and your work?

Art, music, film, literature, dreams, the grocery store, etc. Hope it doesn’t sound condescending, but really inspiration comes to me from everywhere.

What has been your favorite MSPC project and why?

There have been so many victories for both myself and my colleagues that it is difficult to single out just one. But on somewhat equal footing, albeit for different reasons, are the My North video series because of scale and ambition, and the Questlove Sky January 2018 Cover and video shoot, for the mere fact that it was fun and the initial creative vision came to fruition in both print and in digital. 

How did you end up here?

My wife and I were ready to leave New York and return to the region in which we grew up to raise our kids and be closer to family. Given my background and experience, a few peers in the industry recommended MSP Communications, not only for the work, but also because of the work culture of the company. So I reached out, was taken on, and the rest is history.
