5 Questions with Mike Kooiman, MSPC Lead Interactive Designer

Mike Kooiman brings more than 15 years of experience in graphic design to MSPC. His expertise bridges the gap between traditional design and interactive content, helping to produce high-quality, innovative solutions for a variety of Fortune 500 companies and other clients.
As MSPC’s lead interactive designer, Mike specializes in digital design forms, including the strategic planning and execution of motion graphics and video, data visualization, UX, web/HTML and email design. He keeps his finger on the pulse of the content marketing industry and stays up-to-date on best practices for user experience and interactive enhancement.
In today’s edition of 5 Questions we get to learn more about Mike:
Tell us about your role in one sentence.
I help to create and manage MSPC’s digital design offerings, and their related technologies and processes.
How did you end up here?
On the slow boat. After a wrong turn the first time around, I went back to school at age 32 and slowly began to work my way through various design and publishing positions. In each new position, I have tried to up the challenge, my skills and worth.
Who/what inspires you and your work?
Anyone who strives to make a thing better, for its own sake, and for its benefit to others. That’s a gift. I will always be driven to make things better, regardless of compensation, gratification or immediate impact.
Describe your perfect day
I like a variety, so it’s great if part of my day involves collaborative meetings with my super-smart colleagues, and then I can be head-down, engrossed in some design task.
What’s a cause that you are passionate about and why?
I pay close attention to our food universe: its production, sustainability, social impact, health effects, safety and preparation. It drives so much of our well-being (environmental and personal)—but most don’t recognize the importance of the interconnected system.
